Directions For Use uses customized traffic signs, vinyl banners and transit images to offer suggestions for safe, creative use of The Lot, a project of ArtSpace New Haven. The Lot is a public space located at 812 Chapel Street dedicated to public art installations that enliven and energize downtown New Havens 9th Square. Directions for Use was installed at The Lot from October, 2006 through March, 2007, providing colorful and humorous directions on how the space can best be used.
Directions For Use makd its visual statement in several ways. Customized street signs, installed throughout the space, mimic official signage with unexpected and reassuring messages like Play Meet Here Say Hello Celebrate and Rough Road Ends.
A large, colorful vinyl banner on the back wall of The Lot, served as a "key" to the meaning of the project. Visible from the street, this banner signaled drivers and pedestrians that The Lot was open for the business of rest, relaxation and celebration.
A vinyl mesh canopy hung overhead projecting shadows of sign imagery onto the ground and creating a centerpiece for the space.
And finally, images from Directions for Use appeared on New Haven city buses for two months, from October December 2006, bringing its images to all areas of the city and inviting a city-wide audience to visit the space.
